Geordie Hill is a New Zealand high country
sheep station. This station has been farmed by the Goodger
and McCaughan families for four generations, since 1911. The
area is 5,500 acres (2090 ha). It runs 7000 Merino Sheep,
and 150 beef cattle.
The sheep produce around 26 000 kg of superfine Merino Wool.
This wool is sold to mills in Japan and Europe, mainly England,
Italy, and Germany. Also NZ garment makers are making increasing
use of 100% pure NZ merino wool. The fibre diameter ranges
from 15 to 21 microns (1 millionth of a metre). Sheep are
individually eartagged and their micron is recorded on computer.
Wool is classed at shearing, according to its micron and quality.
The finer the fibre, the finer and softer the fabric that
can be made from it. Garments produced from NZ Merino are
available locally in the Merino Shop in Tarras.
Geordie Hill runs a Hereford, breeding cow herd of 100 cows.
Most of the calves are kept on to 18 to 24 months and fattened.
Cattle are on pasture all year and get very little supplementary
feed. Hereford cows are hardy and produce well in this environment.
The grass fed beef has a great taste! Shepherds in the high
country use teams of dogs to help them muster the sheep off
the hills for shearing, weaning ect. The sheepdogs make it
possible for one or two men to handle mobs of thousands of
sheep.
Many guests have found that a highlight of their stay at
Geordie Hill has been to spend time out in the hills with
the shepherds and their dogs, mustering and moving a couple
of thousand sheep.
Crops are grown for winter-feed, these include Oats, Turnips
and Lucerne (Alfalfa). Fertiliser and seed is spread on the
hill pasture with fixed wing aircraft using global positioning
system for accuracy. Modern technology is blended with traditional
shepherding and sheep management to produce quality products
for the worlds markets.
The family have been farming sheep at Geordie Hill for several
generations. The current generation have travelled, worked
and flown in Europe and North America. Family members have
many off farm interests. Brian McCaughan is a specialist in
Rammed Earth building technology. One son is a helicopter
pilot in Canada and a daughter is a chef and professional
international yacht crew. They have a wide knowledge of the
South Island and NZ in general. This is available to you to
help make the most of your stay in NZ.
